Happy Halloween!

A couple of weeks ago, I took the children to get some Halloween portraits.

It didn't go that well, but we did manage to get a few cute ones.

Enjoy!

Whatever you're doing this evening, I hope you all have a safe, fun, spooky night, filled with lots of joy and love!

Preschool Halloween Party

Yesterday I was fortunate to be able to get A.J. into an hourly spot at the CDC so that I could stay at preschool with Peter and help out with all the Halloween fun.

The children began their day with the pledge of allegiance.  :)

After their morning circle time, the 4 year olds got to work on their activities
for the morning (they have class every day so their Halloween party was going
to be the next day) while the 3 year olds lined up to go play outside.
Don't they all look cute there in their little costumes?

Playing Hula-Hoops

My little Dash just happens to basically be best friends with
Spiderman there.

What fun!

Even though 3 or 4 classmates were out, the teacher gathered
everyone onto the play structure for a group photo.

What a bunch!

Next Peter joined his friends in some play doh.

Apparently you need a drill to make whatever it
was he was working on....

It wasn't long before a few other volunteer parents
arrived to set up out little Halloween feast.
What a spread!

Feasting with friends

Love that face.  :)

After their little meal, their wonderful teacher lined the children up to parade
around the school a bit.

There they go.

After parading they came back inside for a Halloween story.
The story was called The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything.  As she is walking home one evening she finds herself being followed by all these random objects (boots, pants, a shirt, some gloves, a pumpkin and a hat) and they all do these little movements as they follow after her and then (spoiler alert) they put themselves together into a scarecrow.  The children did the motions along with her reading, which you can see in this little video...

My goodness, Peter might just be the most animated of the bunch.  :)

When the story was finished the children made some crafts.  The first of these
was making a scarecrow, like the one from their story.

Then they made paper plate jack-o-lanterns
I also helped the children make jack-o-lantern treats by spreading orange icing on a rice cake and then adding candy corn eyes and a licorice mouth.  It was messy and fun.  So much so that I didn't take any pictures or else my camera might have gotten very sticky.

Finally, as their day was winding down, it was time for another circle time.  They read another book and did some songs.  I recorded a little bit of their Halloween version of the Hokie-Pokie because it was just so stinking cute.

It was so nice to spend the time at school with my boy.  He was very well behaved the entire time, and this helped me to believe and understand what they've been telling me all along:  that MOST of the time he is a very good little boy.  Just, occasionally, he has these terrible moments where he does something bad.  (Matt calls it poor impulse control.)  He hits or spits or kicks or something like that, and then when he gets sent to time out or whatever as a consequence, he FREAKS out.  And once he gets all upset, well, basically, it's over.

Now who could he have inherited his temper from again?

Anyway, we're working on it.  He just needs to think before he acts.  To make better choices and understand that there are consequences for his actions.

But thankfully, yesterday, was not one of those days.  :)

Yesterday, was, in a word... PERFECT.

Carving Jack-O-Lanterns

Yesterday afternoon we decided it was time to carve all of our pumpkins.

Before we got started.

If you're wondering, our mini-painted pumpkins
are still decomposing "nicely"

Basically we all went out on the front porch.  Matt did the bulk of the work, with Peter providing assistance. A.J. played with the pumpkin guts until she lost interest and I needlessly stressed myself out trying to make special designs for each of the children that they didn't really care about anyway.

Peter was so cute.  Each time we pulled the top off of one he was all "Look, inside there is spaghetti!!!"

Stop freaking out, those pumpkin carving tools are very very dull.
So dull in fact, that the lady doing the presentation last
week at the pumpkin patch suggested keeping them
around all year to let kids use to chop fruits and vegetables with.

She really seemed to want to put the seeds
and guts back into the pumpkins.

Peter wanted to draw some designs of his own.

Our first completed jack-o-lantern.

An in-progress photo of my first pumpkin.

Eventually we moved the party inside to the kitchen table because A.J. had lost interest and was threatening to wander off into the street.  We came in and let her watch a movie while the rest of us continued working.

Peter and Matt designing the second face.

Peter was clear, he wanted a silly face

Showing me his design

My first completion. "Bot" for Peter, from one of his
favorite shows, Team Umizoomi

Meanwhile, Molly was busy being ridiculous and eating the discarded pumpkin pieces Matt had thrown up on the hill.

Another completion

I asked Matt to get a photo of the big pumpkin
(because I wasn't sure I'd taken one) and this
is what he and Peter came back with.
Senior Portrait much?

My marked up second design getting started.

Matt was convinced we needed at least one "scary" one.
This is what they came up with.

Peter thought it needed ears.  Matt suggested we
use some from a Mr. Potato Head.

I think it worked well.

At this point, if you're keeping score, you'd have noticed that Matt and Peter had completed 3 jack-o-lanterns while I was still, slowly, scraping out the teeny details of only my second design.

Working
And working.

F-I-N-A-L-L-Y, I finished and we were able to get our photos of them all together.

Matt's are on the sides, and in the middle, and my little ones are in between.
But this is hard to see all the details so let's light them all up and look closer:

The silly one

Matt's big one

The scary one

My masterpeice!  "Dora" (the Explorer) for A.J.

and Peter's "Bot"

The whole lot of them.  :)
I'm pretty pleased with the results and I can't wait to light them all up again on Wednesday for Trick or Treat.
